1863 First Communion Certificate
1863 First Communion Certificate
This certificate is a commitment made during a First Communion ceremony. It includes a pledge to Jesus to live a devout life, follow his commandments, and avoid temptations. The art surrounding the paper is from Lith. C. Fasoli & Ohlman a, Strasbg (Strasbourg). The name of the person making the commitment has been written on it, the date, and the name of the ecclesiastical member. This is a bit of a special piece since it's from Alsace-Lorraine. Alsace was French until 1871 when it was annexed by the German Empire after the France Prussian War. The name Alsace changed to Alsace-Lorraine. It remained German until after WWI. This piece is from 1863 but is already in German instead of French. This shows the German influence even before and official changes.
Translation:
Child! As long as you live, think of the covenant that Jesus has made with you today through this sacrament.
Well then, oh my Jesus, since you have completely surrendered yourself to me in the mystery of your love, I promise to dedicate myself to you and your service for my entire life.
1) If I should ever have the misfortune of breaking this covenant of love with you, O Jesus, through sin, may the sight of this keepsake shame me and lead me back.
2) O Jesus, you are all love for me here; so from now on I will also be all love for you, and l will show you my love by keeping your commandments. Jesus, be my comfort, my strength, my help in this sacrament until the hour of my death. I will often visit you here and love and worship you with the angels of peace.
3) Every day I will think of you in the morning and evening, and offer my prayers with faithful trust, especially on Sundays and holidays, in the morning and afternoon, in your sanctuary, offering you the grace of my love and worship.
4) I will avoid all bad or seductive company, games, dances, and revelry, because they would lead me away from you.
