The "Mother of God of the Don" refers to a venerated 14th century Eloisa icon of the Virgin Mary and the infant Jesus, painted by Theophanes the Greek. The original icon is housed in the Tretyakov Gallery in Moscow. This is a very heavy piece from the mid 20th century, made in Russia. The painting has been made to look withered, the coating is still on top.
