Beautiful Roman Missal from 1939 with an early Art Deco cover in red and gold. This missal features a full-page color frontispiece. Used to belong to the Church of Our Lady in Roermond, the Netherlands.

This missal belonged to Father Leonardus Marie van der Bol, born around 1917. He served as a priest for 40 years following his ordination in Italy on July 1, 1945.

He lived with the Salesians in Rijswijk. He served as the central president of the Kolping Society—an organization originally founded in Germany to provide lodging and education to journeymen—and worked for the association in Amsterdam and Leiden.

He was also the spiritual director of the Legion of Little Souls and led prayer groups in Leiden and The Hague. He was also a  member of the Association for Latin Liturgy. One morning a week, he assisted the Bishop of Rotterdam. He served on the services committee of the Dutch Association of Veterans, where he held the position of vice-chairman. He also served on the advisory committee of the Inter-church Committee for Bilateral Disarmament and was the second treasurer of the board of the Oranje Hotel Foundation in Scheveningen.

He worked in the Netherlands, Italy, and Germany and spoke at least 4 languages (Dutch, Italian, German and French). He studied philosophy in Turin and theology in Bollengo. After the war, he was a teacher until 1948, when he was sent to the former Dutch East Indies for a year and a half to serve as an army chaplain. Subsequently, he spent two years in Jerusalem working at the Dominican Biblical School; while there, he also taught theology at Tantur, near Bethlehem.

Upon returning to the Netherlands, he served in the military—including the Grenadiers' and Rifles Guard Regiment the technical troops and The Regiment Huzaren in Amersfoort. Additionally, he studied at the Faculty of Theology in Nijmegen, where he obtained his degree specializing in Sacred Scripture (Old and New Testament and the history of religions).

"Learning, learning, and learning. That has always been my aim. You could say that I find believing irksome. I would rather know something for certain."

On one of the first pages you can find a handwritten note from one of father Leonardus' friends; ''In appreciation of everything you did and do for the Lord. Your friend, J. Narink (?) Rector. 26-11-1964, 03:30 Roermond''

Eight total extra added pages with 1956 being the oldest. Comes with the Ordo incensandi Oblata, the specific ritual for incensing the bread and wine and further altar instructions. Comes with additional notes by the last priest who used it. Several pages has had tears which have been repaired with tape years ago, the biggest flaws have been photographed. No missing pages or prints. Two loose pages and two which has are coming loose.
