Het Leven ons Heeren Jesu Christi - 1618
Het Leven ons Heeren Jesu Christi - 1618
A reprint by Peter van Ghelen after 1488 Gheraert Leeu's work. These and other woodcuts first appear in ''Dat liden ende die passie ons heeren ihesu christi'', completed on July 29, 1482. After his move to Antwerp, Leeu used no fewer than 52 woodcuts in ''Dit Boeck vanden leven ons Heeren Ihesu Christi'' from 1487, written by Lodolphus de Saxonia. A year later, his brother Claes Leeu brought the same work to market in Antwerp once again. The woodblocks were reused several times after Leeu's death and were sold again to the North, where a number came into the possession of printers in Zwolle (same print in the work by Saxonia and by Peter van Os in 1495) and Deventer and again by the Collatie Brothers in Gouda (in another work, namely the Devotee tide van het leven Onze Heren, printed by the Collacie Brothers, October 3, 1496). In the sixteenth century they were used again in Antwerp in the post-incunabula by Adriaen van Berghen from 1510.
Then it is discovered that the life story of Jesus by Ludolphus the Saxoni was printed again in the seventeenth century – 130 years later – with the original woodcuts. This happened in 1618 in Rotterdam, under the title Het Leven ons Heeren Jesu Christi. The title page further states: Now printed for the fourth time, corrected and remarkably improved, with additions of fine morals, after the copy in Antwerp, first printed in the house of Delft, and now by Peter van Ghelen 1618 (Rotterdam). In the Netherlands, only the University Library of Amsterdam holds an edition of this work. This work is also produced in folio and, in addition to the preliminary pages with eight leaves, comprises a paginated section with 352 leaves.
This print comes from a book titled ''Het Leven ons Heeren Jesu Christi'' (The Life of our Lord Jesus Christ.) 1618 by Peter van Ghelen.
Laid paper, made from pulverized cotton or linen rags. Due to the longer fibers of cotton and linen, laid paper possesses far greater strength than modern wood pulp papers. It is also naturally acid free. This means that laid paper often survives vast spans of time – even centuries – in good condition.
