The Knickerbocker Toy Company was founded in 1869 in New York by a family of Dutch immigrants named Van Whye. The Van Whyes changed their family name to Knickerbocker, inspired by the term used to describe early Dutch settlers in New York, a nod to their heritage. The company held licenses to produce toys for popular characters, including Disney, Raggedy Ann, and Smokey. The company was eventually acquired by Hasbro in the 1980s.
