Rituale Rotomagense 1771
Rituale Rotomagense, a Catholic ritual book for the Archdiocese of Rouen.
EX LIBRIS P. L. Labbé, Presb. Dioec. Rothom. (Presbyter Dioecesis Rothomagensis, meaning a priest of the Diocese of Rouen in France).
Pierre-Louis Labbé, born in Rouen on September 28, 1801. He was a Catholic priest, teacher, and religious figure in the Rouen region, whose life story is documented by Rouen Histoire. A former student of the Lycée Corneille, he entered the Rouen Seminary in 1818, then Saint-Slulpice in Paris, where he was ordained in 1827. He was a vicar at Saint-Jacques de Dieppe (1827), later a parish priest of Angerville-l'Orcher (1828). He was a professor at the Yvetot Institution (1831) and became its headmaster in 1855 after the death of his brother in 1855. He was, alongside his brother, and after him, the driving force behind the Yvetot Institution and its expansions. In 1854, he refused the bishopric of Périgueux. His activity, more combative than Xavier's, was very significant in the struggles for freedom of education and also for liturgical reform in the diocese. He was named honorary canon, professor at the Faculty of Theology of Rouen, member of the Higher Council of Public Instruction and later a Knight of the Legion of Honour according to the Persée archives. He died May 25, 1871.
Xavier-Léon Labbé, brother of Pierre-Louis born in Le Havre on May 9, 1803. Ordained in 1827, director of the Yvetot Institution (1827-1855), honorary canon (1836), he was appointed in 1850, a member of the Higher Council of Public Instruction. He was only a subdeacon and already a professor of rhetoric at the Rouen Seminary when in 1826, Mr. Le Boulleux, superior of the Seminary, asked him to take charge of a new minor seminary that he wanted to establish in Yvetot in a former abandoned spinning mill. Already in Cherbourg, he had taken an active part in the plans for the church of Notre-Dame du Roule, the chapel of the Trappists of Bricquebec, and the community of the Sisters of Charity of Cherbourg. He opened the seminary with 45 students, and quickly transformed it, then with the help of his brother Pierre and Abbé Robert, he undertook major renovations that made it a well-established seminary, with a chapel where after his death, the first superior was buried. In 1852 when he was very ill, "he rested by traveling" and was received in audience by Pope Pius IX in 1853. Died March 4, 1855.
